Chapter Five

Gage fiddled with the straw in his drink before looking at Luke. “Remember when we first started dating? I told you I had just broken up with my live-in.”

“Yeah, the topic had neon flashing lights around it that screamed off limits.”

“I know. I was in a bad spot then. The break up was…rough.”

“You want to tell me, now?”

Gage sighed. Yeah, it was time. “I consider myself a Dom, you know that. But there was a time when I was in a relationship that was 24/7.”

Luke’s mouth fell open. “Wow, really? Full out BDSM, huh?”

“Yeah. And, ah, see…I wasn’t the Dom, either.”

Luke choked on his water. He quickly set the glass down. “Say what?”

If he thought that was surprising, Luke was really going to be shocked in a minute.

Gage ran his hand through his hair. “I was the submissive in the relationship. I was the bottom.”

Luke head spun. Gage rarely bottomed. If he did, he did it on his terms. He always had…Luke gulped. Suddenly he was afraid. “You don’t have to talk about this, okay. Whatever happened is in the past, Gage.”

“That’s true. Still, this has been bothering me for a while. You have a right to know why I only bottom on occasion and why I—”

Luke put his hand over Gage’s. “If bottoming was a problem for me, you’d know it. You know I prefer to bottom. Why who’s on top and who’s on bottom doesn’t matter to me.”

Gage smiled. Was it any wonder he loved this guy? “I know it doesn’t. But I need to tell you this.”

“Then tell me. I’m here for you.”

They stopped talking while an older guy brought their food to the table. After the waiter left, Gage sighed and closed his eyes. “I was new to the scene and didn’t have a clue what types of Doms there were, Luke. I hooked up with this guy, and a relationship grew from it. What I didn’t know at the time was he liked pain. A lot. Liked giving his sub pain.”

“Dear Lord.”

“Back then, I was still trying to figure who I was and what I wanted. I knew I liked having control, and bondage interested me. I knew I was more geared to being a Dom. I also knew I needed to experience what a submissive felt so I could be a good Dom. I became involved with this guy. He was good at hiding how sadistic he was, I’ll give him that.”

Luke shuddered. “Tell me.”

“I’ll…try.”

Gage remembered that day as if it just happened. The coughing fit had started before Gage was fully awake. By the time he was done, his eyes were watering and he’d gagged more than once. Shivering, he’d grabbed the glass of water next to the bed, drinking slowly. He had the worst case of cottonmouth ever—a mad drummer had taken up residence in his head, breathing was a distant, fond memory, and God, every part of his body hurt. Hell, even his hair hurt.

Weak and achy didn’t begin to describe how he’d felt.
